The newly appointed Board Chairman of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA), Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, has admonished Ghanaian students to explore alternative fields of study capable of preparing them adequately for the now sophisticated job market.
He made this call whilst addressing students of the Techiman campus of the Valley View University, as part of a series of events to mark the 2021 SRC week celebration under the theme "The role of universities in fostering entrepreneurship to mitigate unemployment".
Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi stated that "If all of us regardless of the discipline we are pursuing in the universities are urged to go into entrepreneurship in addition to wherever our primary aim was, then we'll all be better prepared to go into the world and make money ourselves right after school".
He, therefore, called on students who are now starting tertiary education to consider opting for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) which according to him is a crucial vehicle for social equity, inclusion and job security.
"I'll also urge those of us who are not in tertiary yet to take TVET very very seriously. At least, it should be a first attempt that is exposing yourself to an area that will prepare you to have the chance to work or employ yourself after school. If we combine these strategies, we would be able to equip you in the universities with the knowledge to go into businesses," he added.
He further charged the students to take courses in entrepreneurship in addition to their major study fields.
"I, therefore, want to use this opportunity to urge all of you to take some courses in entrepreneurship to prepare your minds, to prepare yourselves and if we do this, I'm sure we'll all profit from it because the truth is that the public sector is choked and the private sector is struggling to survive. So we all have to put our thinking caps on to be able to survive after school," he noted.
Also present at the function was the former Member of Parliament for Mampong Constituency, Addai Nimo, Municipal Chief Executive for Techiman, John Kofi Donyina, DCE for Techiman North Peter Mensah amongst others.
