Leading Akan radio station in the Ashanti region, Nhyira 104.5Fm, has launched the maiden edition of ‘Akan Akansie’ for Junior High Schools.
The contest has the objective of promoting the Akan language and culture among the youth.
The exclusive quiz competition, to be carried out in the Twi language, is expected to serve as a unique avenue to project the local dialect and culture.
The company believes the predominant use of the English language in schools tend to relegate the cultural identity of the people to the background, hence the introduction of this competition.
According to James Alfred Hemans, Events and Promotions Executive at the Kumasi Unit of The Multimedia Group, it is paramount that all candidates at the Junior High level, are made to write common exams in the Akan language.
He believes the competition offers an exclusive avenue to promote the use of quality Ghanaian language on a media platform.
Fourteen schools in the Ashanti region have qualified to contest for the Ultimate Prize. The competition, which comprises segments on spelling B, Riddles, Proverbs, Idioms, History, Politics and Culture will take place from September 11 – October 23, 2021 on Nhyira FM.
Programmes Director of Nhyira FM, Benjamin Fiifi Ocran, says the contest is billed to be exciting as it seeks to educate and entertain the audience.
Nana Kwadwo Appiah Kubi is the Quiz Master. He is the Anwiankwanta Gyaasehene and Sectional Head for Akan at the Department of Language and Communication Sciences, KNUST.
Nana Appiah Kubi believes the sustainability of the Akan Akansie programme will go a long way to sustain the Akan Language and Culture.
