Civil Engineer, Abdulai Mahama, says traffic lights should be sublet to private institutions for management.
According to him, this will reduce the incidence of malfunctioning lights at various road intersections.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, Monday, he said the private companies are more likely to manage these traffic lights more efficiently.
"I'll suggest that we could sublet traffic lights into the hands of private institutions in Accra, where we segment the capital into lots and place traffic lights into the hands of such companies. So it is their duty to ensure that the lights are working 24/7," he said.
He stated that in the long run, this will drastically reduce road traffic accidents in the country.
His comment was part of conversations on how to curb the phenomenon of road accidents in the country. Highlighting some causes, he mentioned broken down traffic lights as one of them.
Engineer Abdulai Mahama, acknowledged that it is the responsibility of state institutions to ensure the lights are functioning. However, since they have failed to effectively execute this mandate, the law should be reviewed accordingly.
"I don't know what is happening to the state institutions. If you ask the Urban Roads Department about the broken lights they'll refer you to Assembly. If you go to the Assembly, they'll also tell you they are not in charge. So we need to be able to streamline if the Urban Roads Department is not responsible enough," he said.
Executive Director at Toptech Transport & Logistics, Cecil Garbrah who was also on the show, clarified that there are institutions available for this purpose. However, due to the failure of the government to support them financially, they are unable to operate effectively.
