A virologist, Dr. John Amuasi has advised that vaccines may no longer be a solution to containing the third wave of infections driven by the deadly delta variant.
“Vaccination is not a solution to this current third wave, it’s not an option may be for potential future wave, yes it is an option,” he said
This he believes is associated to Ghana running out of time in averting full blown Covid-19.
“Too late right now for the vaccine thing because the full effect of the vaccine will be felt weeks after you’ve been able to at most double jab people. Majority greater by far the population do not have a vaccine, a few have the first jab and very few have the double jabs and even those with double jabs we are still seeing a few break through infections here and there,” he said
According to the Leader of Global Health and Infectious Diseases Research Group at KCCR, the situation will get out of hands within days if immediate action is not taken to contain the third wave of Covid-19 infections in Ghana.
He added it possible the things would get much worse if the Covid protocols are not adhered to.
“Now the only saving grace we have is the washing of the hands and social distancing and so on.”
Dr Amuasi’s position is also backed by the country’s doctors union, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) which has confirmed in a communique issued last night that the Covid-19 situation in Ghana is now alarming and dire with the rapid spread of the delta variant.
President of the Association, Dr Frank Ankobea in the release admonished state health institutions to enhance “contact racing as well as strict isolation and management of all infected persons at designated centres together with strict adherence and enforcement of all Covid-19 preventive protocols to help break the chain of transmission.”
It also has called on the government to expand free and enhanced Covid-19 testing in the country to mitigate the rapid spread of the Covid-19 delta variant.
Meanwhile, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service also at its high level management meeting identified lack of adherence to the safety protocols as a major factor in the spread of the virus.
