An Immunologist and Research Fellow at the West Africa Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens(WACCBIP), University of Ghana, has attributed the spread of the Delta Variant of Covid-19 in Greater Accra and Ashanti regions to a lax in the enforcement of the safety protocols.
Dr Yaw Bediako said this could be the cause of the spread of the virus in the Achimota School.
Speaking to Benjamin Akakpo on the Am Show Monday, Dr Yaw Bediako indicated that a survey of people who attended weddings and parties during the weekend would reveal that they did so without adhering to Covid-19 protocols.
"Non-adherence to protocols is rampant in this country. From schools to offices to public transport to social gatherings.
Anybody can ask themselves if protocols were strictly observed when they went out this weekend. The answer will obviously be No! So the bottom line is that adherence has declined and we have become complacent. The opportunity for super spread is very very high," he stated.
He warned that the Delta variant is one of the highly transmissive variants that has emerged so far.
"This is what we have been predicting for the past few weeks based on what we have observed and what has happened in other countries around the world with regards to Delta,"
Research indicates that the Delta variant has already been recorded in 98 countries.
