The Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah has accused President Akufo-Addo's government of tacitly endorsing violent incidents recorded in the country.
According to him, the President's failure to deal decisively with the various incidents by punishing the culprits has caused the phenomenon to spread.
Speaking in an interview with JoyNews’ Maxwell Agbagba, the NDC Director of Elections said there is looming civil unrest as a result of the government's lackadaisical attitude to addressing the violence.
“For the first time in the history of Ghana, registration was bloody. Poor Silas lost his life. Hawa Koomson claimed she shot people. Bloodshed all over. Hawa Koomson today has been promoted and she’s now a cabinet member. If the President was displeased with her actions, he wouldn't have promoted her."
"Would he have given her a higher level of responsibility? While the National Security and Communications Ministers are not in cabinet, Hawa Koomson finds herself in there. All these are tacit endorsement," he indicated.
Mr. Ankrah’s comments come on the back of recent military and police brutalities recorded in parts of the country.
It was first in Ejura, where joint police and military force shot and killed two protesters and injured four others, demonstrating over the murder of Ibrahim “Kaaka” Mohammed, a social activist and member of the #FixTheCountry movement, who was beaten to death by unidentified people.
Within 72 hours, another group of soldiers went on a rampage in the Wa township, brutalising residents after claiming a mobile phone belonging to one of them had been stolen.
Touching on these, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah insisted that the refusal of the President to take a stand against such acts did not help in the fight against the menace.
"The Nana Akufo-Addo government and the NPP are benefiting politically from all these things that are going on. Granted that one may argue that he may not have directly authorised them but when these things happen and he has the opportunity to sanction them; to send a clear signal that he is not in favour of them, he doesn't," he argued.
Although a three-member committee has been instituted at the directive of President Akufo-Addo to probe the Ejura disturbances, the NDC is skeptical about a positive outcome.
The Former Sports Minister accused the NPP government of deliberately creating an environment of fear to gag citizens from pointing out the ills in society.
He further listed some violent incidents which he says have gone unpunished. According to him, persons involved have rather received subtle endorsements through promotions and appointments.
He mentioned Madam Hawa Koomson's appointment to cabinet and Lt. Col. Frank Agyeman's directive to head the 64 Infantry Battalion after his National Security exit as some of the posture of the President on violence.
Mr. Ankrah also said the rejection of about 60% of the Emile Short Commission's report which investigated political violence in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election was unfortunate.
He believes that Ghana's democracy is in danger and it is about time citizens get united in defending the country from arbitrary rule.
