Kontihene of Ejura-Sekyeredu, Nana Odiasempa Antwi Obugyei II, has called for calm among protesting youth, demanding justice for the death of a #FixTheCountry campaigner, Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed.
"I'm appealing to all Ejura citizens to calm down. We are not in a war; we want justice for our brother, who died. But out of that, we are escalating things, and it is turning into a horrific thing, so I'll tell them to calm down," he said.
This follows the death of Kaaka Mohammed; a 40-year-old believed #FixTheCountry activist.
The deceased died Monday, June 28, 2021, after a mob attack. Kaaka's death has sparked a series of protests in the community.
On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, a clash between the military and the youth claimed the lives of two more persons. Several others were injured.
Speaking to JoyNews, the Kontihene stated Kaaka's death was a recipe for disaster, so traditional authorities had initiated measures to avoid a conflict and maintain peace in the community, but unfortunately, things did not turn out as expected.
"As soon as Kaaka died, we knew disaster could spark, so we started talking to all factions involved. We've been talking to them and calming them down. It wasn't easy, but we've tried our best."
He said the chief Ejura-Sekyeredumase had spoken with a sizeable number of persons, including the Zongo Chief, to maintain peace.
"Most of the elders had assured us that calm was going to remain, but we don't know what happened. Then, suddenly, we heard that there was a confrontation between the youth and the peacemakers.
"We don't want to fight the military or the security agencies. We want justice for the dead, and that's what we are seeking for, so government should come to our aid and support us," he added.
