Government has officially announced the end of its free water intervention. This is to take effect July 1, 2021.
The intervention was first introduced in April 2020 to absorb the cost of water and reduce the economic burden on citizens when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country, and President Akufo-Addo announced a lockdown.
This was to last for a three-month period, from April 1, 2020, to June 31, 2020. But subsequently, it was extended on two separate occasions; from July 1, 2020, to September 30, 2020, and October 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021.
Also, in the year 2021, the policy was maintained for lifeline consumers. This was from the period of January 1, 2021, to March 31, 2021, and subsequently renewed from April 1, 2021, to June 30, 2021.
In a statement sighted by JoyNews, the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resource has announced the end of the intervention.
"Effective July 1, 2021, all consumers/customers of the Ghana Water Company Limited, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, NGOs and partners in the water sector, will pay for the water they consume.”
The statement also urged the public to conserve treated water and protect water bodies.
