Over 37,000 non Ghanaiana have been intercepted at Ghana's various land borders since they were closed by the President in March last year at the height of the covid-19 pandemic.
This was disclosed by the Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Kwame Asuah Takyi, Thursday on the sidelines of a gender sensitisation workshop for top managers of the Immigration Service.
But with insurgent actions in neighboring countries, the Service says it's up to the task in ensuring border safety and preventing terrorists from entering the country.
"Since the borders were closed by his excellency last year March we have intercepted over 37,000 non citizens trying to enter Ghana through the Eastern Frontier, Western Frontier and Northern Frontier. So our men are doing their best", he noted.
There have been reports that some personnel of the Immigration Service take bribes to allow non citizens to enter the country without the requisite security checks and immigration processes.
Comptroller General Kwame Asuah Takyi said although they may be a few bad nuts in the service, there are more Immigration Service officials who perform their duty with diligence and in strict adherence of the law.
He, however, warned officers who engage in such conduct to desist because when they are caught they will be taken through the disciplinary procedures of the service.
On the porosity of the various land borders, the Comptroller General said his personnel are well positioned and continue to gather intelligence and work on them in spite of the poros borders.
"As I speak now, we have operation Conquest Fist, where we have the military, the police, immigration service, ambulance service and custom division of GRA positioned at the various borders.
“When you talk of porosity of the borders, we have Intel on the ground, we have our men on the ground and government is doing its best to ensure that these terrorists don't enter the country."
The Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service also appealed to citizens, especially those living along the borders not to allow foreigners into the country but partner the service to deliver on its mandate.
