Security Analyst, Emmanuel Habuka Bombande has described the IGP's comment to the effect that, it is only in heaven where there is no crime, as unbecoming of the head of a Police Service.
IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh while addressing journalists after commiserating with the family of late Constable General, Emmanuel Osei, who was shot by some armed robbers on Monday, June 14, said "we are doing what we can to protect the people of Ghana. There is no society in the world where there is no crime. Even in the USA, UK, and Sweden, where they, more or less have everything, they still have crime. The only place that doesn’t have crime is heaven and we are not in heaven."
He subsequently received massive backlash for this comment.
Mr Bombande said the statement is a deflection from the main issues.
"That should not be a comment coming from the Police because it deflects from the main issue. Such comments create despondency and a sense of desperateness. It makes people begin to question your professionalism," he said.
He stated that the police must, instead resort to statements that calm the public.
"Everybody knows that. So you don't need to say it to the people of Ghana," he advised.
Mr Bombande suggested that, "as technocrats, the Police must do their work, and even when there are challenges, you continue to assure the people on how you are trying to prevent crime by apprehending, prosecuting and sanctioning criminals."
