The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has been urged to summon three Ministers whose portoflio has to do with security before the House to explain the rise in daylight robbery cases in parts of the country.
They are the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery; Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul and National Security Minister, Kan Dapaah.
The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, while addressing the House, Friday prayed the Speaker to call the three to appraise the House on measures to address the country's insecurity situation.
According to him, informing the general public through the House about interventions being rolled out by government to address the menace will give some assurance and relief to Ghanaians.
"The country has seen multiple bullion van attacks, a police officer has been killed, and the insecurity situation is escalating, and it has become quite alarming. And so if the Deputy Majority Leader can create some space for the security Ministers to respond to this matter, which is of enormous public interest. I am grateful, Mr Speaker," he said.
The Deputy Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in repsonse, suggested that the three Ministers be brought before the leadership of the Defence and Interior Committee to answer questions on how security will be enforced.
"I think that is why we have Committees, so I would want to encourage Committee leadership to take up some of these things. These are matters I believe Committees can take up and then meet the Ministers so a report is brought before Parliament," he replied.
The robbery attacks witnessed in the country recently have resulted in the death of some police officers and civilians.
On June 14, a daylight robbery involving attack on a bullion van at Adedenkpo, near James Town in Accra, resulted in the death of a police officer, Constable Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu.
Apart from the James Town incident, another policeman was killed while on escort duty on the Adansi Fomena road in the Ashanti Region.
On Thursday, a bullion van was also attacked by armed robbers at Gomoa Okyereko on the Kasoa – Winneba road.
The police officer on escort duty, together with the driver of the van were fortunate to escape unhurt.
Currently, the Police Service is investigating the crimes in order to arrest the perpetrators.
Meanwhile, the Interior Minister will next week be in Parliament to justify why DSP Samuel Azugu remains at the National Security Ministry as Head of the SWAT Team even after the Justice Emil Short Commission’s recommended that his secondment to that Ministry be revoked.
The Interior Minister is also expected to brief the House on the circumstances under which Fire Service officers in Akyem Begoro travelled in a taxi with extinguishers to put out a fire.
Ambrose Dery will as well highlight outcomes on investigations into attacks by a group called Western Togoland Secessionists in the Volta Region in October 2020.
