The Ashanti Regional police command suspects contract killing in the shooting of the wife of Nana Agyemang Prempeh, a driver of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.
Benedicta Pokuaa Sarpong was shot at close range in her Range Rover vehicle at a spot near Airport Roundabout on Monday dawn.
She was later pronounced dead at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The deceased was leading a convoy of three vehicles, including that of her husband at about 12 a.m when the incident occurred.
Her assailants fired shots after Mr. Agyemang Prempeh confronted the suspects over reckless driving.
Police say the four men on board a green Toyota Camry vehicle sped off after the shooting.
The deceased was pronounced dead a few minutes after arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
The police suspect contract killing since the assailants did not rob the victim or take anything away.
“From the narrative, we are not ruling out contract killing because as nothing was taken from the victims. They were not robbed of any personal effects,” said ASP Godwin Ahianyo, spokesperson of Ashanti Regional police.
Police has since taken statements from two people, including the husband of the deceased as it awaits one more person.
ASP Godwin Ahianyo, told Joy News they are relying on a CCTV footage from the National Security to arrest the perpetrators.
“We invited the complainant who is the husband of the deceased and he’s given us some leads. He was in the company of some other persons. The Command has also invited those persons to also come and give statements to police.
“So far no arrest has been made but then we are in touch with National Security Secretariat because of CCTV cameras mounted around the Airport Roundabout.
“I am sure when are able to get the footage, we would be able to get some leads that would help us unravel the circumstances that actually led to this allege murder of the young lady”.
The shooting comes as Kumasi records recent violent crimes with cases at Buokrom Estate Junction, Bantama, among others occurring in broad daylight.
Despite these incidents, the police command says the region has recorded a reduction in crime rate.
“When you talk of crime situation in the region, comparing these cases you are talking about and that of last year and that of previous years, I will say relatively, crime is very low.
“Per our statistics, the first and second quarter of this year, we have not had cases on the ascendency. They are rather very low. But we have recorded one or two violent cases”
As we speak, arrest has been made; some persons have been arrested in both cases.
Meanwhile, the command is urging residents to take care of personal security as the police launch strategies to protect lives and property. ASP Ahianyo says the practice where residents flaunt wealth especially on social media must stop
