The Association of People Living with Disability (PLWD) in collaboration with some stakeholders on Friday planted some 250,000 tree seedlings around the environs of West Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region.
The exercise, which was led by the Savannah Region Minister, Saeed Muhazu commenced at the Palace of the Gonja King, Yagbonwura Suleman Tutumba Bore-Essa (I) where some 50 trees were planted before moving into the communities including Yipala, Nabori and to the Savanah Regional Coordinating Council.
There was a massive turn out as residents planted about 350 seedlings in the areas listed above.
Speaking to JoyNews, Regional Chairman of People Living With Disabilities, Takora Joshua Dramani lauded the government's intervention to protect the environment.
He gave the assurance that his outfit would monitor the growth of these trees as a sign of their commitment to the project.
"Government has done well and we also need to do our part by planting them. That's why me and my members are here to work and protect the trees.
"As part of our role in greening Ghana, the Association of PLWD will from time to time, be moving round to supervise and observe the growth of the trees," he stated.
Regional Minister Saeed noted that various plant species that were felled for charcoal production and illegal logging among others, will be replaced.
According to him, the residents are poised to assist government realise its objective.
" As you can see, we have nets. They are meant to serve as a protective mechanism for young plants from animals. As you already know, water is key and we have made provision for it. In the next coming days, that will be addressed. So, the region is ready because the Youth for afforestation and others will join hands by always coming to inspect them.
Our agenda is simple Green Ghana and revive the lost ecosystem and we in Savannah are more than ready to plant and revive and protect the vegetation without fear or favour," he added.
On his part, the District Chief Executive for Central Gonja, Mustapha Mahama appealed to residents, especially peasant Farmers and Herders not to toy with the plants.
He added that, "the trees you are seeing today, represent our tomorrow. So, I encourage you to watch over them and not destroy them or allow your cattle to play with them. Else, we deal with you when caught".
President Akufo-Addo on June 11, spearheaded the Green Ghana Project as part of his administration's initiative to recover the country’s vegetation cover. The project was carried out in all 16 regions.
