Director at the Legal Assistance Network Ghana, Irene Aborchie-Nyahe says it an abuse for husbands to deprive their spouses the freedom to earn a living for themselves.
Her comment comes on the back of a video circulating on social media about a woman who says her husband has deprived her the freedom to secure a job for herself
In the video, a helpless mother of two is seen crying and asking for help. She had bruises on her face and body.
Speaking to Sampson Lardy Anyenini on JoyNews' THE LAW Sunday, May 30, Irene Aborchie-Nyahe said the video shows a woman who is capable of working for herself but has been denied that freedom because she had to be obedient to her husband.
"Ït is part of abuse to prevent a human being who happens to be a woman not to follow her dreams, work and earn income. So her husband told her not to work and she has been deprived financially. Now she is crying for a lawyer, because she doesn't have anybody. She doesn't have the money to go out there and get what she wants," the legal practitioner expressed.
Again, the Executive Member of The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-Ghana), added that husbands who infringe on the rights of their wives to work and fend for themselves are not just abusing them domestically but are inflicting them with economic abuse as well.
She also intimated that husbands are abusing their wives at home anytime they refuse to eat their food.
According to the Lawyer, “anything that makes life unbearable or doesn’t make the home peaceful for the other person to survive as a human being is an abuse.”
Domestic violence may be suffered by men as well, but JoyNews findings reveal that women are most often than not, the victims of domestic violence.
