Today, May 28, marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day. As such, social media has been buzzing with scores, mostly women, sharing their experiences during their menstrual cycles.
Despite the continuous presence of the Covid-19 pandemic, social media - which is a powerful tool has been employed by many across the world to celebrate both women and girls on this important day.
They say menstruation is a regular part of life and should not be stigmatized as seen in some countries.
The theme for this year is: “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health.”
For some females, menstruation is an easy-peasy phase they pass through every month but for others, it is a herculean task owing to systems put in place by various governments in their respective countries.
Availability and cost of sanitary pads have posed challenges for some women and girls in some African countries.
To create awareness that menstrual hygiene is indeed an essential topic for discussion, the hashtags #MenstrualHygieneDay, #BreakTheTaboo, #PeriodShaming have been employed to chart this path.

If you can afford pads today, kindly think about #Rural areas. If free condoms was possible then free sanitary or affordable sanitary pads is possible#MenstrualHygieneDay
Remember the days in school when we had to ask for pads to friends secretively. It used to be like a crime back then. Let's start conversations around #menstruation !

Today is #MenstrualHygieneDay. OK. This reminds me of a camping trip I took as a kid- my period came early and I was not prepared. The entire campsite looked like a murder scene. Luckily, we were all girls and thought the whole thing was kind of funny. My sleeping bag was ruined.

Period blood is probably the only blood that is not borne out of violence - yet it's looked down upon. Embrace nature. Regardless of your gender, know that our health affects yours too.#MenstrualHygieneDay pic.twitter.com/qoLPTQzWLa
"Every menstruating human deserves to bleed with dignity. Unfortunately, this normal biological process that unifies us beyond caste, creed, colour, or race, becomes an obstacle for many young girls in India.

When a man tries to tell me that #periods cramps aren't that bad, and that every woman has it so I shouldn't make a big deal out of it 🙄
