The Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, says the Vetting Committee has already begun thorough background checks on the Special Prosecutor nominee, Kissi Agyebeng.
According to the Suame MP, the checks is to establish the eligibility and qualification of the nominee.
Speaking to JoyNews’ Kwesi Parker Wilson, he said, “we want Parliament to expedite action, but given the sensitive nature of the position, we also want Parliament to do a thorough job, on the background of the person to establish the fact that he has the qualification and the eligibility to handle his portfolio."
In April, a private legal practitioner and chairman of the Electronic Communications Tribunal, Kissi Agyebeng was nominated by the Attorney General to replace Martin Amidu as the next Special Prosecutor.
The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, accepted the nomination of Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor and, through a letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on April 29, sought Parliament’s approval of the appointment.
However, some people questioned the nomination with many casting doubt on Kissi Agyebeng’s competence because of his alleged relationship with some members of the NPP.
Some members anti-corruption crusaders have questioned how well he will do in the area of corruption as he is said to be close friends with some people in power.
Others were concerned about his age.
Former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini for instance, has stated that the legal practitioner is too young to fight corruption.
Meanwhile, Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu believes that these concerns will either be put to rest or proved right at the vetting.
He stated that if Mr Agyebeng is unfit to handle the Office of the Special Prosecutor, it will be brought out at the vetting, and subsequently, actions will be taken from there.
The Majority Leader added that the Appointment Committee is yet to set the date for vetting.
He added, “the chairman of Parliament’s Appointment Committee and some of the senior members are outside the jurisdiction. So they would upon their return establish the date for the special prosecutor's vetting."
