Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery has urged the Ghana Police Service to cooperate with citizens in dealing with issues of crime alongside ensuring a safer society.
According to him, the fight against crime can only be won with the help of Ghanaians.
Mr Dery said this at the opening of the National Police Command Conference which brought together the top hierarchy of the police leadership to discuss ways to ensure a safe and peaceful country.
"The need for corporation between the police and the public cannot be over-emphasized, security is a shared responsibility to the success of security services. May I then suggest that this corporation can be enhanced by a shared of information by the police with the public which is better.
"But if you allow the only information that gets there is that these people were killed by arm robbers then the situation becomes difficult," he added.
He reiterated President Akufo-Addo's commitment to ensuring that Ghanaians feel safe in the country adding that "to achieve the President’s goal of feeling safe goes beyond statistics and when you do give people the information it makes them more confident not just security but feel safer".
Mr Dery lauded the Police personnel for their good work in ensuring a peaceful and safe country.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) James Oppong-Boanuh has also charged the Police Service to develop sustainable measures in dealing with violent crime.
“These crimes are perpetrated by a network of organized criminal gangs who are quite well resourced and equipped to commit crimes internally and externally. We need to develop sustainable measures to insulate communities from violent crimes.”
Mr Oppong-Boanuh also called on Ghanaians to contribute their quota in helping to ensure a safe Ghana by volunteering information to the public. This, according to him, will help the police protect the people.
