The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) Foundation has refuted claims that it is not honouring its obligation to students it is sponsoring in Cuba.
Dr Dominic Kwesi Eduah, the Executive Director of the Foundation, has blamed the phenomenon of students running out of money abroad over the years on their insistence on receiving their stipend in cash (table-top).
He said attempts to get them to go through the established process has failed.
He told JoyNews that as an international company, GNPC cannot issue payment of any kind in cash.
According to him, this has accounted for the occasional delays in the students accessing their stipend.
Agitated students on the GNPC Foundation's scholarship programme who are studying in Cuba, have complained about being left cash-strapped because their benefactor usually defaults in paying them the monthly stipend of $250.
The students are alleging that the death of 23-year-old Erasmus Dzorgbenyui Klutse was due to the hardship he could no longer endure because he ran out of money. The cause of the student's death is yet to be made known.
Meanwhile, the Foundation has promised to engage more frequently with the students on how to make the scheme and the package better.
