Willow Smith revealed she is polyamorous in a new episode of the Facebook TV show Red Table Talk, titled “Is Polyamory For You.”
Though this isn’t the first time Willow had discussed both monogamy and polyamory on the show – she previously said she could see herself being “polyfidelitous” – it is the first time the 20-year-old has openly described herself as polyamorous.
In the episode, Willow discusses what polyamory means to her with her mother Jada Pinkett Smith and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norris (best known as Gammy.) “I feel the main foundation [of polyamory] is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says ‘it’s the right thing to do,’” Willow explained.
“Doing research into polyamory, the main reason why monogamous relationships, or why marriages, why divorces happen is infidelity.”
Willow’s confession was met with support from her mother, who said “she totally gets it,” but Gammy saw it differently. “For somebody like me, [polyamory] feels like it’s all just centered around sex,” she said.
To address Gammy’s concerns, Willow got more candid about her own love life, admitting that even though she’s the only polyamorous person in her group of friends, she has “the least sex” out of all of them. “I was introduced to [polyamory] in a nonsexual way," Willow says.
“Let’s say you haven’t always been the kind of person that wanted to have sex all the time but your partner is. Are you going to be the person that says, ‘just because I don’t have these needs you can’t have them either?”
The trio went on to discuss how the traditional concept of marriage would fit into polyamory and how important the role of communication is in both polyamorous and monogamous relationships.
“The problem is if you go into a relationship thinking that this is going to be exactly how it is today until the day that you die, you are in trouble. You are sadly mistaken,” Jada recounts.
“Regardless of what the dynamic of the love is going to be like – whether it’s five or whether it’s just two people involved – it’s going to change.” “That’s when the conversation comes in,” Gammy adds. “Practicing monogamy has to be a choice that you make, just like practicing polyamory.”
To finish off the convo, the trio also enlisted the help of two individuals in a polyamorous relationship as well as relationship coach Effy Blue to discuss more.
