Poultry farmers have been asked to add value to their products to increase their sales potentials.
According to Agricultural Economist, Isaac Nunoo, selling specific parts of the chicken will increase the profitability of poultry farmers in Ghana.
Selling specific parts of chicken can give customers a wide range of choice.
Isaac Nunoo is also a lecturer at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness and Extension at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
For a competitive edge, he says it is critical that poultry farmers explore opportunities in the poultry value chain.
“They can go into selling specific parts like it's imported from other countries. They should put them in parts and sell them to consumers because not everyone can afford a whole chicken. This will increase the level of sale and consumption of poultry products”, he noted.
Speaking at a poultry youth mentorship and business boot camp, Mr Nunoo urged the youth to venture into poultry farming.
“The poultry industry has very good potential especially for the youth to venture into it. People have done it and succeeded so they can also do it and succeed.
They just have to put across a good business plan, take mentorship from people in the poultry industry and take a bold step” he said.
The three-day boot-camp seeks to educate young poultry entrepreneurs on the poultry value chain.
GPP organizes a mentorship program each year in which prospective poultry farmers are attached to established poultry businesses to undergo hands-on training.
The best mentees are provided with starter parks to commence the poultry business. The poultry mentorship programme has opened economic opportunities for young graduates.
It was organized by the United States Department of Agriculture under the Ghana Poultry Project.
