Director of Training at the Electoral Commission (EC) has tagged the 2020 general election as the most successful, well-coordinated, seamless, and peaceful election organised in the history of the fourth republic.
According to Michael Boadu, the leadership of EC ensured that processes required to facilitate the conduct of the polls were well established prior to December 7, 2020.
He attributed the success of the exercise to the numerous electoral officials hired and training.
“Between 2016 and 2020 we increased the number of polling stations by 10,000. This means the Commission hired 146, 122 more staff working on an exhibition and elections day alone. And yet, we managed to redeem the cost of per person by almost half.
“From the aforementioned, one can simply conclude that the 2020 parliamentary and presidential election was the most successful, well-coordinated, efficient, seamless and the most peaceful election organized under the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” he said.
Mr Boadu further promised that the EC will not rest on its oars but continue to upgrade its systems to meet the mandate in subsequent elections.
Meanwhile, the Former Chairman of the United Nations Office for West Africa says election-related violence that characterised the 2020 polls has tainted Ghana’s image internationally.
According to him, the lives that were lost in the process leaves much to be desired as far as the country’s democratic credential is concerned.
He recalled using Ghana as a reference when addressing crisis elsewhere, explaining that “there are never any deaths as a result.”
“If they occur, they are accidents that happen from vehicles, motorcycles, or people going to/from party events. I think this time our image has been tainted in that regard,” he lamented.
