President of the Ghana Independence Broadcasters Association (GIBA) has opined that enacting a broadcasting law is essential for the growth of the media fraternity.
According to Andrews Danso-Ahenkorah, these regulations will go a long way to help develop the nation.
"We need regulations if we are going to talk about development, we need regulations when we are going to talk about growth, and we need regulations to be able to convince ourselves that this is how we started from and this how far we have come and through this we are here," he told JoyNews' Evans Mensah.
His comments follow a stakeholder meeting held Friday to deliberate on measures necessary to prevent the broadcasting of inappropriate media contents as well as to apply appropriate sanctions to all who breach the law.
Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah says the government is taking inputs from technocrats and industry experts and at the same time being tactful in the passage of the Broadcasting Bill.
However, Mr Danso-Ahinkra emphasised that although these restrictions are necessary, they should not curtail freedoms GIBA enjoys under the constitution.
On the other hand, the Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah has commended government for the public dialogue on the Broadcasting Bill expected to be passed into law should it be approved.
Mr Braimah revealed that the drafting of the bill’s passage is long overdue as a country that has enjoyed almost 30 years of independent broadcasting.
"It is quite surprising that the nation is yet to finalise a framework that will respond to what is provided for in Article 164, there need to be legislation to ensure that the freedoms are qualified appropriately".
