National Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku says the European Union's (EU) report affirms the victory of President Akufo-Addo in the 2020 general election.
Speaking on Top Story with Evans Mensah, he indicated that even though the report has been greeted with criticism from the opposition party, the EU's position on the electoral processes reflects the true situation on the ground.
"Be as it may, we are confident that the NPP did a good job, we believe that the elections 2020 was not 100 per cent but on the balance of it we believe that the process was free, fair and transparent and we won."
His comment comes on the back of EU's report describing Supreme Court's verdict on the election petition presented by the 2020 NDC challenging the outcome of the election as reliable.
The EU Chief Election Observer Javier Nart commenting on the processes leading to the court’s decision said, “We have full confidence in the procedure and the legitimacy of the courts in Ghana.
“So the decision of the court, we accept it because we think it is reliable and acceptable and was proceeded in a normal and neutral way."
On a flip side, the Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Otukornor disagrees with the report of the EU.
Described the European Union’s report on election 2020 as defective, the report does not accurately capture the happenings on December 7 which led to the death of eight citizens.
“We think the report was wholly defective, it didn’t report what actually happened during the elections. We have since rejected the report and requested that if it is possible, they should make the correction to reflect what really happened during the elections.”
Reacting to Otokunor's response, the NPP National Organiser argued that the absence of reported deaths in the EU's study does not downplay the credibility of the work.
"Otukonor recounts the fact that even though in the European Union’s report on the deaths were unfortunate, they were regrettable and unnecessary, it shouldn’t have happened at the first place but they do also say that has been the position of the NPP that in all fairness we won the elections freely, fairly and it was transparent.
"The isolated incident of what happened in Techiman South and other places are issues that I know that they are still under investigation," he told Evans Mensah.
