Government has revealed that it will lay a new bill in Parliament which seeks to empower the Ghana Book Development Council to sanction publishers who put out bigoted content.
The two Publishers including Badu Nkansah Publication incurred the wrath of the public with books many described as ‘offensive description’ of Ewes and inaccurate recollection of Ghana’s history.
The Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum in an interview on JoyPrime's On the Record explained how the new law will help avoid this situation.
"There is an organisation called Ghana Book Development Council, they are the ones clothed with authority to do enforcement and to prescribe sanctions. Their Bill went to Parliament during the last Legislature, there were some issues with it so the process had to be suspended and now it is coming back.
“So once Parliament approves the bill expeditiously, will then cloth them with the authority to seriously prescribe sanctions,” he told host Daniel Dadzie.
He insisted that government under the current legal regime cannot impose sanctions.
“We are in a democratic dispensation, many years ago, you could have ordered the military or somebody to just sanction them. But that is not the case, now, you have to use the legal process to right wrongs.”
Meanwhile, Mr Badu Nkansah has rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians and all who have in one way or the other been negatively affected.
Again, the publishing company promised to investigate and track down other copies of the textbook that have illegally found their way into the market
“Though it is not a deliberate attempt to berate such a huge section of our society. We wish to unreservedly apologise for the slip. Our brand stands for national unity, and we currently employ workers who originate from all parts of the country,” the firm stated.
