The Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum is expected to appear before Parliament to address the publication of some textbooks published by Badu Nkansah that promote negative prejudices against Ewes.
His summoning to the Floor of Parliament follows a request by the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to have the Education Minister explain why “bigoted publications” targeted at denigrating the Ewe ethnic group are used by pupils in some Primary Schools.
Mr Ablakwa has described the two textbooks, 'History of Ghana Text Book 3' by Badu Nkansah Publications authored by Badu Nkansah and Nelly Martinson Anim, and 'Golden English Basic 4' authored by Okyere Baafi Alexander as “offensive, divisive and incendiary”.
According to JoyNews Parliamentary Correspondent, Kwesi Parker-Wilson, although the said date and time of this meeting has not yet been communicated, it is certain that Dr Adutwum will be in the House to address the matter.
Meanwhile, some legislators in Parliament today including Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Ablekuma West MP, Peter Nortsu Kotie, ranking member on the Education Committee have condemned these textbooks and have requested the House summons the officials of the Education Ministry and National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) for further explanation.
Although Badu Nkansah has rendered an unqualified apology to all Ghanaians, the North Tongu MP says Parliament will not accept the apology.
Mr Ablakwa has also accused NaCCA of failing the country for allowing such books to be on the market since September 2020.
Also, the Volta Region House of Chiefs (VRHC) together with some institutions have registered their displeasure and discontent on the issue and are demanding the two textbooks be withdrawn and destroyed.
