The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye has debunked rumours that government is running out of vaccines at the various vaccination centres.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile Saturday, he confirmed that Ghana has vaccines and more than enough doses to be administered to additional health workers who aren't frontline workers.
He added that other health workers will be receiving their jab starting next week.
"If you go to the nearest health centre where vaccination is regularly being given, you will receive your jab," he said.
He noted that the reason why some vaccination centres don't have vaccines is that the doses were regularly moved to other health centres.
"I don’t think it’s about vaccines. It’s about removing certain vaccination points. We started with the surge in trying to look at a lot of points across the normal area.
"After a week, we withdrew them back to the regular health centres where they were. So a place like the headquarters [GHS], the EPI [Expanded Programme of Immunisation] was all to mop up some of the staff around Korle-Bu to reduce all the movements around."
On Monday, Dr Kuma-Aboagye announced that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has within a week, vaccinated 300,000 people since the Covid-19 mass vaccination programme commenced on March 2.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, together with their spouses, showed leadership by being the first to take shots of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Monday, March 1, 2021, ahead of the mass immunisation.
