The Ghana Buffer Stock Company will soon begin supplies to Senior High Schools (SHS) following the disbursement of funds by the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.
Several SHS heads had succumbed to various means to keep schools afloat following a cut in food supplies.
Unable to bear the pressure, teacher unions including the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers’ Association (CCT-GH) released a statement indicating further actions against the Education Ministry if the situation didn’t change by next week.
Portions of the statement read, “…Since the past eight weeks when the senior high schools re-opened for the 2020/2021 academic year, not only has the supply of food items by the Buffer Stock Company to the SHS stopped but also the Education Ministry has failed to transfer the needed funds for the smooth running of the schools.”
So the teachers insisted on actions to be taken stating, “Consequently, we call on the Ministry of Education and all the duty bearers to act swiftly to save the precarious and difficult situation currently confronting the schools by the close of Friday, March 19, 2021, if by the close of next week, we do not receive any favourable response, we shall determine the next line of action.
Well, the Education Minister, Dr Yaw Adutwum told JoyNews, Parker Wilson that the monies had been disbursed.
“No, there are no food shortages, we’ve released funds to Buffer Stock to make sure they can pre-supply them and move forward in every respect in terms of food.
"I have not heard of anything in terms of food shortages in our schools. I outright the release of funds yesterday to Buffer Stock. Buffer stock will do the announcement next week.”
Teachers are hoping the schools reach their schools in time.
