Another body retrieved from Apam sea

The body of a 16-year-old boy, who drowned with about 20 other teenagers in the Apam sea, has been recovered.

This brings the number of dead bodies to 13 with two who were found alive currently receiving treatment.

The boy, whose body has been deposited at St.Luke’s Hospital at Apam, was reportedly found ashore.

However, it is believed that more bodies are yet to be retrieved as one of the survivors disclosed they were about 25.

The teenagers reportedly went to an area – where swimming is not permitted – along the shores of Apam on Sunday, March 6 to swim.

But while they were swimming, a heavy tide rose and they could not control themselves so they were taken away by the sea.

Meanwhile, government has come to the aid of the families of the deceased children who drowned on Sunday in the Apam Sea.

Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, on behalf of Government, visited Apam in the Central Region Wednesday morning and made the presentation, which included an amount of GH₵36,000.

Mrs Hawa Koomson again expressed her condolences to the bereaved families and the entire community for their loss and assured the authorities of government’s support in ensuring the necessary rituals and various funeral ceremonies are performed as demanded by tradition.

The Fisheries Minister presented GH₵10,000 to the traditional authorities for the necessary funeral rites and cleansing rituals to be executed to prevent such incident from ever occurring.
