“I want God to help me take care of my daughter before I die. I also need help to walk,” that is the woeful cry of Georgina Yawa Ankrah, a mother confronted with two depressing situations.
She has a chronic medical condition, diabetes which has robbed her of her youthful exuberance and also the burden of raising a child with a disability.
Yawa’s cry for help was captured in a JoyNews report on February 16, 2021.
The heavens finally responded to Yawa’s cry for help. On Friday, 19 February, the First Lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo through her Foundation paid a visit to Yawa to support her.
“JoyNews did the story about Madam Georgina Yawa Ankrah and the First Lady was so down when she saw it. She said, go and give a helping hand to this woman and tell her that I love her so much and I am willing to support her,” a representative from the Rebecca Foundation, Akua Asabea Kropa MacCarthy disclosed.
“And so, we are here today with all these items; bags of rice, mackerel, boxes of cooking oil, tomato paste, a wheelchair because she is cripple, cloth, sanitisers, some nose masks and other beautiful items,” she added.
An amount of GHS3,000 was also presented to Yawa to support her upkeep.
Following the intervention of the First Lady, Yawa started receiving medical attention on Tuesday, 23rd February at a hospital in Accra. This visit to the hospital could mark her first step towards recovery.
“She is doing well. Diabetes has been confirmed. She has gone through a few medical exams and tests to be able to ascertain whether she has some complications because of the diabetes,” stated Dr. Salamatu Nantogma, Family Physician Specialist in an interview on Joy Prime.
“She is currently on admission and we pray that she will be fine,” she added.
The Rebecca Foundation’s intervention was not all.
Yawa’s story also attracted the attention of Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell who paid a visit to her at the hospital Friday morning.
The outpouring of love and support showed Yawa after her story was aired on JoyNews could mark an end to her days of abject poverty and misery.
