The Minister-designate for the Greater Accra Region, Henry Quartey has promised to minimize the crime rate in the capital city under his watch.
According to the former Deputy Minister for Interior, he will work with the Regional Security Council (RESEC) and other stakeholders within the region to minimize criminal activities.
“Mr Chair, issues of crime across the country are matters of concern to all of us, when given the nod I will be the chairman of the Regional Security Council (RESEC), and with the experience from the Interior Ministry and that of the National Security Ministry, I will do my best.
"I will work very well with the members of RESEC and other stakeholders to ensure we minimize the rate of crime in the region,” Henry Quartey who also doubles as Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central said, giving the assurance when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The assurance follows a report by the Bureau of Public Safety expressing concern about the growing incident of violent crimes including murder in the country.
The Bureau in its 2019 half-year report remarked that “Crime and Violent Crime continue to be a matter of concern as the two accounts for over 60% of all public safety events reported between April and June 2019.”
The Bureau of Public Safety said the Greater Accra Region has consistently led in the number of public safety concerns including violent crimes, with about 199 incidents recorded in 2018 and the previous year, 2017.
Responding to issues of public safety events under crime, violent crime and among others, Henry Quartey assured the committee that when given the nod he will implement a manual dubbed “Let’s Make Accra Work Again”.
The programme, he said is to tackle issues of crime, sanitation, indiscipline, fight against Covid-19 and among others to ensure sanity within the capital of Ghana.
Henry Quartey also assured the Committee of his commitment and that of stakeholders to implement series of initiatives to better the lives of residents within the Greater Accra region.
