Sports Minister-designate Mustapha Ussif has disclosed the government’s intention of staging a successful African Games in their first attempt.
Ghana won the rights to host the popular multi-sport event for the first time ahead of Nigeria and Burkina Faso in 2018.
It is expected that the 13th edition of the games will be held in three cities – Accra, Kumasi and Cape Coast – with dates yet to be confirmed.
But with two years to go, there are doubts, the West African country can host the tournament. The only meaningful step taken by the government in relation to hosting the games is the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
But, member of parliament for Yagaba-Kubori Constituency believes they are on the right track.
“The President [Akufo-Addo] has since inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and I’ve met them for briefings.
They have started setting up sub-committees to look at human capital development. The idea is that we don’t want to host the All Africa Games without winning any medals.
Apart from that, we’re also setting up a sub-committee to look at the infrastructure development.
We’re going to put up an Olympic Village which will come with facilities which, after the games, will serve as a University for Sports Development.
We are very focused. The government is focused to host the best ever All Africa Games in the country.”
