AshantiGold held WAFA to a goalless draw, Dreams FC continued their brilliant form with another win and Karela reclaimed top spot with an away victory over Ebusua Dwarfs.
Here are the talking points in matchday 14:
Hearts of Oak set for a turbulent campaign
The Phobians were not involved in the just ended matchday but were in the news for multiple negative reasons.
First off, Serbian coach Kosta Papic tendered his resignation which was duly accepted by the club. Then, goalkeeping coach George Owu followed suit.
Shortly after, team manager Saban Quaye was shown the door by management. Fans showed discontent on Wednesday by storming the club’s secretariat.
The unfortunate sequence of events are a shame for one of Ghana’s biggest clubs and it will surely affect performances on the pitch.
The Accra-based side are 11th on the log and the situation could take a turn for the worst in the next few matchdays.
Can anyone stop Dreams FC?
Eight games, five wins, no defeats. Dreams FC are arguably the best team since the start of the year.
Before their resurgence, the Still Believe boys had recorded just one victory and were in the mix for the relegation battle.
In a fortunate turn of events, the Dawu-based outfit have moved to third on the log and pose a great threat to the likes of Karela United, Great Olympics and Kotoko.
With Joseph Esso and others firing in all cylinders, there is hope that Dreams can challenge other teams for the title.
AshantiGold end WAFA’s scoring spree
It is always difficult to get any result in Sogakope but AshantiGold got the herculean task done to satisfaction.
Ahead of the tie, WAFA had scored a grand total of 18 goals in six games at the Red Bull Arena this season. Also, the Academy boys had scored at least one goal in those games.
However, AshantiGold, who have conceded a lot of goals this season, held their opponents to a goalless draw away from home.
Last season, the Miners conceded six at the same venue so it is considered a huge improvement. But, the Obuasi-based side need to find wins quickly. They have failed to record a victory in their last six league games (D3 L3).
Circovic will be under huge pressure to completely turn things around.
Legon Cities are making a good case for survival
After the first few games were played this season, Legon Cities were projected to be strong relegation candidates and for good reason.
Asamoah Gyan had played a few minutes after joining the club with a huge salary and goals were hard to find.
The last five games have seen a huge turnaround for Bashir Hayford’s side. Despite recording two wins during the period, the Accra-based side have not recorded any defeats.
It is impressive considering the fact that the Royals faced AshantiGold and Hearts of Oak and came out unscathed.
Legon Cities are now one point above the relegation zone and if they keep playing like this, they would be able to increase the gap.
Great Olympics should be feared by contenders
After losing 3-1 to Bechem United, there were doubts about the capability of Great Olympics to challenge for the title.
This matchday did in some ways put those doubts to rest. Needing a victory to return to the top four, the Oly Dade boys delivered thanks to a lone goal from Maxwell Quaye.
The club have also added an interesting player to their lineup. On 15th February, the club announced the signing of former AshantiGold midfielder James Akaminko.
Akaminko was one of the best players in the league last season and can form a deadly partnership with Gladson Awako in the middle of the park.
Olympics are just a point behind table toppers Karela amd will prove to be deadly foes with their recent addition.
