The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, Thomas Musah says the association will investigate the 90% of Senior High School connectivity to free WiFi purported to by the Communications Minister-designate.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful on Monday during her vetting revealed that under her watch as the former Minister for Communication, 90% of all SHS schools in Ghana are connected with Free WiFi.
Speaking on the AM Show, Tuesday, Mr Musa, however, indicated that the said free WiFi connectivity cannot be backed by any data, and therefore requires further probing to ascertain its veracity.
“From the perspective of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, the 90%, I cannot speak on authority that we have a data to that effect and therefore I cannot contest it nor say it is not true since I don’t have any data to that effect. And so while the Minister has said it, what can happen is for us to interrogate and use the remaining days in the week to find out and do more investigation regarding what the minister has said."
The General Secretary of GNAT believes that the number of SHS connected to WiFi may have been exaggerated.
According to him, 79% of the Ghanaian population has access to electricity, thus, making it quite difficult to believe what Madam Ursula is projecting.
Mr Musa further added that the association will take the necessary steps to cross-check and audit these claims.
“Regarding these particular statistics, I think it will juxtapose that to what the minister said. I think this will give as the cause to actually investigate and interrogate the figures that the minister has put out.”
