An internal audit report into the operations of the PSC Shipyard in Tema has revealed several financial irregularities, including payment of over 55,000 Ghana Cedis to police personnel who patrolled the yard during an impasse between workers and management in 2008.
The rot also includes payment of over 40,000 Ghana cedis to shady subsidiary companies for the execution of sub contracts.
The audit report was addressed to the board of governors of the Tema Ship Yard consisting of some Malaysians who have also been cited for wrong doing.
The company was previously state-owned but was divested in 1997 with the aim of revamping its obsolete equipment and machinery.
But, 12 years down the line, workers claim that the company has been completely run down, blaming the Malaysian firm with majority stake for the poor state of affairs.
The police administration at the Tema Regional Police Headquarters, according to the report received some 55,000 Ghana cedis as payments for patrol duties from 12 December, 2008 to 9th March, 2009, an allegation the then Regional Police commander, DCOP John Kudalor has denied.
He told Joy News in an interview on Monday, “To the best of my knowledge, nothing like that was paid,” even though he admitted that personnel from his outfit went to the shipyard to maintain law and order following agitations by some of the employees against management.
He said if there were any such payments, the Regional commander will know about.
He said he has requested for a copy of the report and the appropriate will be taken.
