A suspected robber has been shot dead along the Achimota Forest stretch after he attacked two pedestrians and snatched their phones.
According to a police report, the suspect armed with a knife emerged from the Achimota Forest Reserve at about 9:00 pm on Wednesday, snatched a passerby's phone and run into the forest.
He was chased by a snap check duty men at the Achimota CP roundabout, however, he managed to outrun them into the forest.
The police laid an ambush after unsuccessful attempts to catch him.
After a while, they saw him snatch another phone at knifepoint from a lady who alighted from a commercial vehicle at another side of the stretch.
According to the police, they began to chase the robber who had once again made a run into the forest. In an attempt to slow him down, he was hit by a bullet.
The robber was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has been deposited at the police morgue.
The police, in a press address, revealed that fighting robbery on that stretch has been a headache for the district, the division and the regional command.
They say the robbers, who pretend to be prayer warriors hide in the forest and come out late in the evening and early during the morning rush hours to attack people with offensive weapons.
They snatch bags, phones and other valuables they can get from their victims.
In November last year, a woman was stabbed around the area when her vehicle's glass was forcefully rolled down and her handbag and phone were taken.
This prompted the command to mount the snap checkpoint and also post plain cloth police at the area during evening and mornings rush hours.
Though five arrests were made in the last quarter of last year, of whom two were jailed, the problem still persist, they added.
The police are hoping that with the death of such a notorious robber who according to them had operated in the forest enclave for many years, the robbery activities on the road along the forest stretch may subside.
They advised the public to avoid using their phones while using the Achimota forest reserve road or roll up their windows while driving around.
