Head of the ambulance service in Walewale, North East Region, Moses Atampugre Ayamga, has apologized to the public for the service's inability to respond to a fatal road accident that occurred this dawn at Nasia in which more than 10 lives were lost.
The vehicle which was traveling from Kumasi to Bawku with 45 passengers onboard, according to the driver, Tanko Ibrahim, crashed into the Nasia bridge after he lost control while trying to dodge a herd of cattle.
The accident was said to have occurred at about 3:00 am but there was no ambulance for timely evacuation of the victims to hospital.
The victims were later transported in a police patrol van almost two hours after the accident after the ambulance service in Walewale failed to respond to distress calls from the scene.
In an interview with JoyNews' Eliasu Tanko, Mr Ayamga explained that the ambulance had been out of commission for almost a week due to faulty brakes.
"It is not that we intentionally refused to attend to the accident or the car was in commission.
"And we deliberately took it out of commission, as you can see we are still at post, it was due to the faulty brakes," he revealed.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed the death of one more person, bringing the death toll to 11 while almost 20 others are still being treated in Walewale and Tamale.
The security services have also been able to clear the road and vehicular movement on the Tamale - Bolga highway have resumed.
