The immediate past Deputy Education Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has been appointed by President Akufo-Addo as the substantive minister for the sector.
The educationist who is the MP for Bosomtwe Constituency in the Ashanti Region was tipped for the position weeks before the official announcement by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin.
This is because he is credited for some major transformation in the educational sector including the implementation of the NPP's flagship Free SHS and the double-track system.
Also, there had been calls by various stakeholders in the sector to the President, to replace the former Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh who is heading to the Energy Ministry with his then deputy, Dr Adutwum.
The stakeholders, including the Executive Director of Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson had argued that Dr. Adutwum is highly learned, widely read, knowledgeable, and abundantly well-resourced with the requisite training, practice, and skill set to deliver results for the President at the said ministry.
According to them, elevating him to the position of a Minister, would go a long way to reform education in Ghana.
His love for education, which led him to pay the full university fees for some 30 freshers heading to the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) at Tarkwa, also made him the favourite among the various names that popped up before the nomination.
Apart from his excellent credentials, Dr. Adutwum was also voted the Best Deputy Minister by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), a research institution, and FAKS Investigative Services, a research firm in October 2019.
