The Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Titus Beyuo has described as "unfortunate" government’s justification that the spike in Covid-19 cases is not due to political activities prior to the December 2020 elections.
This comes after President’s Representative at the Information Ministry, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah on JoyNews’ The Probe Sunday said there is no science and data to back the assertion that political activities contributed to the rise in cases.
For Mr Nkrumah is it rather the recklessness of some individuals during the yuletide season that has led to the surge in cases.
But responding on Joy FM’s on the Super Morning Show Monday, Dr Beyuo said Mr Nkrumah’s argument is misleading since the contact tracing and mass testing drastically declined during and after the 2020 election.
“When we try to disaggregate the figures and try to apportion blame that this virus some activities did not lead to it but others led to the spread of the virus, it is very unfortunate."
He then quizzed, “How many people after a rally were tested? There was no mass testing going on, we had restricted testing to only asymptomatic people. So if you had not tested these people, how then can you say that political activity did not contribute to the spread of Covid-19?”
Meanwhile, according to the Ghana Health Service, active Covid-19 cases stands at 1,924 with 352 deaths.
