Traders at Kantamanto who were affected by the recent fire outbreak recorded at the market have been temporarily relocated to the car park of the Accra Railway Station.
In a statement signed by Railway Development Minister, the decision was made after Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia led a government delegation including the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, representatives of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to engage the Executives of the Kantamanto Traders Association.
According to Joe Ghartey, it was to serve as a provisional space for the traders to continue their trading activities as the yuletide season approaches.
“As a follow-up, officials of the railway sector will meet Members of the Association at the Accra Railway Station at 9 am on Saturday, 19th December 2020 to see to the smooth implementation of this decision," the Minister added.
Parts of the Kantamanto market in Accra’s central business district was reported to have caught fire around 10 pm Monday.
Though there were no casualties, property and goods running into hundreds and thousands of cedis were been lost as the fire razed many shops.
Subsequently, Vice President Bawumia visited the scene and promised the victims that government will reconstruct a modern market for the traders.
