Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu says the 2020 general elections has created a situation where no political party will have an overall majority in parliament.
According to him, the hung parliament may prove beneficial to the country's democracy if politicians strive to negotiate and compromise on issues that would be in the best interest of the public rather than any partisan interest.
“That probably may be good for the future strengthening of democracy in Ghana if we reflect on the interest of the Ghanaian people, and parliament is responsive through reforms to use parliament in order to negotiate and compromise on issues in the best national and public interest and not in the partisan interest,” he said.
However, speaking on Joy FM’s News Nite Thursday, the Tamale South MP accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of employing tricks to steal parliament’s majority by preventing the NDC to seek redress regarding the collation of votes at Techiman South constituency.
The NDC insists it won the Techiman South seat and has been demanding that the EC collates and re-collates the votes to set the record straight.
He said, “Techiman South is critical because we know that we’ve won Techiman South. How come then that there can be re-collation and collation in Sene West, there can be collation and re-collation in Banda and there cannot be a re-collation in Techiman South.
“Let anybody at the Electoral Commission - national, district, regional - share with the Ghanaian people the presidential and parliamentary results in detailed figures as required by regulation 43 of C.I 127 then we would understand that a said declared can be contested.”
He stated that calls from the NDC for the Statement of Poll from the Techiman South constituency have largely fallen on deaf ears by the EC, “So even if you are urging NDC to go to court; go to court to question what?”
Meanwhile the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has won the parliamentary seat in the Sene West Constituency in the Bono East Region by a slim margin of 16 votes, according to provisional results.
There were a total of 26,407 valid votes cast with 660 rejected ballots.
The counting was supervised by the EC officials in the company of Dan Kwaku Botwe of the NPP and NDC General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia among others.
This slim margin of 16 votes brings the Parliamentary seats to 137 apiece with the NPP-biased independent candidate making up a full House.
The EC is yet to make an official declaration of the results.
