The Executive Director of West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP), Chukwuemeka Eze, says it is within the right of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to have a peaceful protest.
According to him, the peaceful protest by the NDC is part of their legal right as a party to express their grievances if they feel they were unfairly treated in the just-ended elections
“When they (NDC) feel they are hurt, they need to be allowed to express themselves in the most peaceful manner that they can,” he said.
His comment follows series of protest by the opposition party and it supporters against the 2020 election results declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).
Recently, some residents of Ashiaman in the Greater Accra Region took to the streets to demonstrate against the verdict of the EC chair after President Akufo-Addo was declared President-elect
According to them, Jean Mensa did not declare the true verdict of the just-ended elections, insisting that the NDC presidential candidate was the winners of this year’s elections.
However, Chukwuemeka Eze cautioned the NDC to be mindful in their pursuit to resolve their issues and take into account the current situation of the country.
According to him, the party needs to sit down and reflect on whether or not the protest will yield the result they seek while keeping the peace of the nation intact.
He said, “It is important for the NDC to appreciate what is at stack at the moment, for instance, those protest within the context of a pandemic, within the context of an already charged environment. How would they resolve issues at hand?”
