Thousands of young people are flocking to Onlyfans after high profile celebrities and creators revealed huge earnings from the controversial content sharing platform.
The site allows users to upload any sort of content, including pornographic materials of themselves for a fee.
In May, it was revealed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Stokely that 6,000 to 8,000 new creators had been joining everyday with 200,000 customers signing up every 24 hours.
In April, the platform received a 50% boost when popstar Beyonce mentioned it in one of her lyrics.
For young people looking to make some quick cash, the earnings of big celebrities such as Blac Chyna and Cardi B have been motivations to create an account.
Emily, 21, from Kingston recently opened an account after learning that Love Island star Megan Barton Hanson was able to purchase a three-bedroom luxury home in London after earning £800,000 on the platform.
She said: “I have opened the account but still have not brought myself to upload anything yet.
“I am worried that someone I may know could chance on my page but then it seems like such easy money which could help me a lot.”
Although the platform has been around for years, it recently gained mass recognition after big names signed on to rake in extra cash.
Previously, it was mainly used by sex workers and porn stars who did not want to be tied to big studios and wanted more control over how much they make.
Chris, 19, from West London decided to join the platform after he lost his job due to the outbreak of coronavirus.
With up to 250 pictures and videos since July, he claims signing up was one of the best decisions he has ever made.
“I am now my own boss and I can go to work at any time."
“I post nude pictures and videos of myself, but I never show my face. I charge my clients extra money to show them my face,” he admitted.
According to Chris, concealing his identity is a way of protecting himself against the stigma attached to sex workers.
He said: “I don’t want to be shamed or bashed and I know people can leak videos and pictures, so I choose to remain anonymous unless someone is willing to pay good money to see my face".
“I am not a sex worker, just a young man trying to put food on his plate.”
Cardi B is currently the highest profile user on the site after she created an account following the release of her racy single WAP.
In the UK, former Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona joined the alternative social network in May claiming she wanted to have full control of her glamour photos.
