Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Supt. Sheila Abayie-Buckman has called on Ghanaians to trust in the security agencies in the country to ensure a violence-free election.
“Trust in the security services at least for this election,” she said.
With just two days to the 2020 general election, some Ghanaians are concerned about the security agencies' readiness following the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election disturbance in 2019.
Speaking on JoyNews' NewsFile on Saturday, Supt. Abayie-Buckman said such an act will not repeat itself in the upcoming elections.
“It’s unfortunate, Ayawaso is just one constituency out of 275 constituencies but what happened had given an impression as though the security services are not up to the task but we are,” she said Saturday.
According to her, “the commission of enquiry on Ayawaso incident made it clear that the SWAT team that came there that day were not deplored by the Ghana police service.”
“We are assuring you that this election, it is the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ghana Fire Service, the Ghana Prisons Service and the custom division of the Ghana Revenue Authority that are going to give protection.”
“Any other institution not mentioned will not be at any polling station, if anybody comes, we are ready to arrest and we know that the good people of Ghana will be happy about that,” the Superintendent of Police added.
Supt. Abayie-Buckman further stated that the BNI will also be supporting by doing covert operations.
“The person could even be the Kayayie (head potter) who is passing by or the man selling the ‘Kofi broke man’ or that man in a suit so you shouldn’t have any problems,” she explained.
“There are also three tiers of deployments who will be there to arrest, there will be patrols that will be conducted by officers of the operational units of the police service and officers of the Ghana Armed Forces,” she added.
