The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has dismissed claims that the party wants to ride on the back of the demise of former President Jerry John Rawlings to garner votes in the upcoming elections.
His comment follows accusations that the NDC is being opportunistic and openly exploiting the death of the party’s founder to gain the sympathy of electorates ahead of the December 7 polls.
But speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story Monday, Mr Ofosu Ampofo said the NDC’s Probity and Accountability March is far from the tittle-tattle opponent are disseminating.
For him, the March is solely in memory of the late former President who is a beacon of anti-corruption, accountability, transparency and social justice.
“We are never going to use the death of our founder for political point-scoring. We are using it to honour the time-tested principles that he stood for which are probity, accountability, transparency, social justice, and inclusiveness,” he said.
Mr Ofosu Ampofo further accused the Akufo-Addo government of engaging in numerous corruption activities at the expense of the public purse.
According to him, President Akufo-Addo has facilitated stealing of public funds by appointing family and friends.
This, he said, flouts the principles of their founder.
In view of that, he said, “It is important that the principles for which his party was established is espoused and reinforced and to assure ourselves as we even fight to win this election. So we are only reminding ourselves that those principles are relevant to good governance.”
