The Hadid sisters are a multifaceted duo. Whether they’re masked-up to volunteer at food banks, headlining (and occasionally photographing) the season’s most high-profile campaigns or horseback riding in slouchy plaid shirting — Bella and Gigi are equally at home when baking cookies at their mother Yolanda’s rural Pennsylvania farm as they are striding the Paris runways.
This December, as many of us welcome an earlier start to the mood-raising festive season than usual, the Hadid’s at-home content is poised to offer added escapism.
From Gigi’s tongue-in-cheek Christmas tree decorations to Bella’s daily strolls in the company of how-can-they-be-this-adorable farm animals, and the occasional Super Mario Party marathon — in a festive dream world, we’re all the additional Hadid sister.
Have your Christmas cookies to hand, this is your (strictly unofficial) guide to mastering the festive season like a Hadid.
- Bake like your life depends on it
Question: are you even a Hadid if you can’t bake? Answer: no, and the bar is set pretty high.
Gigi and Cake Boss’s Buddy Valastro share mutual admiration for one another’s baking skills (he made her surprise 25th ‘bagel’ birthday cake) and Bella is a dab hand at whipping up chocolate-chip cupcakes, white chocolate-chip cookies and Rice Krispies treats. Things to say on Christmas Eve: shall I preheat the oven? What not to say: I’ve been sugar-free for two years.
2. Dust off your Ugg Boots and invest in a robigan
Baby ‘Zigi’ isn’t the only portmanteau in the Hadidsphere. For winter 2020, Gigi brought us the robe-cardigan hybrid knit, hereby known as a ‘robigan’ — a cosy wardrobe solution for sleep-deprived new mothers, and those of us who complain about being cold all day while hunched over a laptop. Note: you’ll also need to pay attention to your footwear. If you’re going to live like the world’s most in-demand supermodel sisters, you’ll need to dust off those chestnut Classic Mini II Ugg boots.
3. Get plenty of fresh air, preferably in the company of many adorable farm animals
We’ve actually lost count of Yolanda’s expansive brood of farm animals. There’s the teeny-tiny goats, Blue, the chocolate-brown horse with that icy, campaign-worthy gaze and at least one shaggy Highland cow, plus a smattering of miniature ponies. To be honest, we didn’t used to be the type to share cute animal pics in our WhatsApp group threads, but then: pandemic. If Bella and Gigi haven’t proven the unparalleled joy and companionship that happy animals offer during the sheer insanity of 2020, we don’t know what will.
4. Get creative with your Christmas tree decorations
Gameboys, cheeseburgers, margaritas. Hit pass on the regular festive decor this December in favour of tongue-in-cheek kitsch. Could 2020’s holiday season be the kiss of death for the cult of the flawlessly curated Instagram feed? Let’s hope so. Gigi Hadid is an unashamed Christmas maximalist and we’re here for it.
5. Don't forget to decorate your hair
As far as 2020 festive dress-up goes, we’re not about to not do a 2000s beauty moment. Enter Bella in Marc Jacobs’ offshoot line, Heaven, showcasing the seasonal appeal of with paintbox-bright extensions.
6. Soak up extra hugs within your Covid-secure bubble
We don’t get to talk enough about how much we miss hugs. Quarantining, self-isolation and as many tests as it takes are all worth it for the moment when you get to unleash your inner Bella and Yolanda, and not let go until 27 December.
7. Tune out with a Nintendo break
If we had to sum up December downtime in 2020 using just three words, they would be: Super Mario Party.
Gigi makes no secret of her love of gaming (hence the Valorant Halloween costume) and there’s arguably no better moment to rekindle your summertime obsession with Animal Crossing: New Horizons in time for some seasonal island hopping.
8. Show some heart
Whether she’s restocking New York’s Lower East Side community fridge, auctioning her personal wares in aid of NAACP and the NHS, or collaborating with Chrome Hearts on a capsule collection that saw 100 per cent of proceeds go to US hunger-relief organisation, Feeding America — Bella’s ultimate hallmark is her continued charitable efforts.
The new supermodel signature? A compassionate streak that springs into action all year round, and amps up during the festive season.
