Political risk analyst and a Senior Fellow at IMANI Africa says the EC's target for declaring the 2020 election results within 24 hours is attainable.
Dr Theo Acheampong said considering the output of the EC in the voters registration exercise, there's no doubt the EC will be able to efficiently carry out its duties in the upcoming elections.
"In fact, looking at the voters' registration exercise that was carried [out] and the whole issues with Covid-19, they still managed to conduct the exercise quite satisfactorily and I don't think that there would be any issue that will necessitate the EC having to unduly delay the release of the results," he said.
This comes after the Electoral Commission announced that it will declare the results of the 2020 elections within a 24 hour timeline.
Director of Electoral Services, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, in an interview with Joy News' Mamavi Owusu Aboagye said plans are in place to ensure there are no undue delays with declaring the results within 24 hours after the close of polls.
Responding to the comment, Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), described the target as "unrealistic."
He further added that these "unrealistic expectations" created by the EC might force them to “cook numbers” if they are unable to announce it within that timeframe.
However, Dr Theo Acheampong argued that collating and declaring election results can be facilitated with the aid of technology.
"Remember that even some of the political parties are able to collate the results within 5 to 6 hours of the elections and that's facilitated by technology.
"If we look at most part of the country, we have the 3G or in the Metropolitan areas, 4G internet connectivity so I don't think that it should be difficult declaring results within a 24/48 hour window," he added.
