The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Ghana has introduced two new programs; the Girls in Mathematical Sciences and Master of Mathematical Sciences for Teachers Programme.

These programs are aimed at equipping teachers with the fundamentals of teaching mathematics and also training students especially girls to appreciate mathematics and Science in Africa especially Ghana.

Speaking at the launch, the Centre President of AIMS Ghana, Dr. Prince Osei said the program was deliberately introduced to educate mathematics teachers with basic contents of the subjects and ways it should be taught for students especially girls to understand.

He also said that the institution is making efforts to support girls who have interest in science and mathematics to make their minds broader to be innovative in their fields. “We want to encourage girls to enter science, support and mentor them,” he added.

The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Prof. Kwesi Yankah, who was present at the launch commended AIMS Ghana for introducing these programs and also stressed the need for other institutions to partner with the Ministry of Education to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics at the secondary school level.

“We need Mathematics in every aspect of our lives and it is a must to equip our future leaders with the necessary skills in the subject,” he added.

He further added that the government is committed to supporting any teacher training program that seeks to improve the quality of teachers in the country.
