Traditional music duo Kwame and Kpodo were on Thursday awarded the winners of the European Union delegation in Ghana song contest against child labour at a brief ceremony held at Zen Gardens, Accra.

They were recognised after going through the selection of the jury together with votes from the general public.

The two were rewarded with a keyboard, a laptop and professional recording session to aid them record the official song for the campaign against child labor.

Kwame and Kpodo after the award thanked the EU delegation in Ghana and the Ghana Employment and Social Protection (GESP) for the opportunity.

"We are particularly grateful to the EU and GESP for the opportunity. For us as a music group, we are more than encouraged to use our talents to make society better particularly to end child labour in Ghana. These musical equipment given us will aid us to produce more music and strengthen our music career…” they said.

The European Union delegation in Ghana in collaboration with GESP in August this year launched the song against child labour contest in their bid to raise awareness through arts ahead of the year of elimination of child labor in 2021 as declared by the United Nations.

According to the European Union delegation in Ghana, the move to organise the song contest was motivated by its commitment to play an active role in combating child labour, especially in agriculture.

Development Partners are committed to take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms.

The European Union and the four components of Ghana Employment and Social Protection programme fully support the global fight against child labour.

In Ghana, the EU Delegation contributes to combating child labour through civil society organisations.

The EU and GESP invited musicians to send in theme songs for consideration. Entries were screened, shortlisted, categorized and presented to the public for voting.

In all, over 52 entries were sent in.
