The head of programmes at the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition says the Office of the Special Prosecutor might no longer look attractive for anti-corruption campaigners.

Bright Sowu said this is due to the circumstances surrounding the resignation of Martin Amidu from the job.

According to him, anyone nominated to the position would be concerned about the independence of their office and the amount of seriousness government will attach to their reports.

His comments follow the resignation of Martin Amidu who cited political interference in his work as one of the reasons he had to leave the office.

In Amidu’s letter to the press, he stated: “The reaction I received for daring to produce the Agyapa Royalties Limited Transactions anti-corruption report convinces me beyond any reasonable doubt that I was not intended to exercise any independence as the Special Prosecutor in the prevention, investigation, prosecution, and recovery of assets of corruption. My position as the Special Prosecutor has consequently become clearly untenable.”

According to Bright Sowu, the alleged lack of independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor would be the main reason why other anti-corruption campaigners may want to avoid the office entirely.

He said: “It’s something anybody else who moves to that office who has that genuine heart to actually do the work and do it on behalf of the people of Ghana not for any particular president, not for any particular government, he’ll take a long hard look and say well for the sort of work where I need to submit a report for the president to act or the executive to act, do I have the confidence that they’ll actually act on those particular reports and take the case to a more logical conclusion?”

He added that, “For example people coming to that office will say do I have the support to make this office work? Will I be successful in this endeavor?”
