Over the past few years, Ariana Grande's iconic high ponytail has become her signature. Though the pop star has experimented with pigtail buns and half-up styles, it's the pony that we think of when Ariana's name comes up. The musician knows her hair has become a big part of her image and she even has a new song about it on Positions titled — yep, you guessed it! — "My Hair."
Ariana recently discussed her hairstyle journey at length in an appearance on the Zac Sang Show via Zoom.
Ariana had her hair pulled up in the classic pony, but she took some time to talk about how every style (including the bright red hair she rocked on Victorious) has made an impact on her career and life so far.
“[Hair] definitely is [personal], especially when your hair kind of is something that you use to differentiate, you know what I mean?” she explained.
"It’s kind of like the red was Cat, and that was very much a character, and it was very much a portion of my life that I love and I am so grateful for. I look at it and I love it ... I think I fondly of that, but it is not me.”
According to Ariana, the red hair signifies a "transitional period" in her life and career.
"I did put out ‘Put Your Hearts Up’ with red hair, and that felt weird. I felt like it was keeping me in," she said.
"Everyone thinks I hate that record, I do not, but I do consider it a transitional part of my life. That’s why I never made an album or anything because I didn’t feel like that was an accurate reflection of who I was as an artist or a person."
After the red hair, came the ponytail, and history was made!
Ariana also discussed her real hair, which she's shown off a few times before.
“My real hair, which is the humungous, curly, curly poof is kind of, I don’t know … So few people get to see it, and it’s cute, and it reminds me of me as a kid ... it’s who I am privately,” she shared.
"But so is this. I wear my ponytail all the time too, but the curls are definitely something that I don’t bring around much.”
The song "My Hair," as cheeky as it is, is also an ode to those more vulnerable moments.
“I think that’s kind of what I envisioned that song being about, is because it’s like such an intimate thing to be just like curly shower head. My boyfriend loves it. He’s like, ‘Curlies, yay!’” Ari said.
"It’s like a very intimate thing ... The hair for me is such a guard, character façade type thing, and it’s had its own evolution, but it has always been this kind of costume piece.”
